Social Media and... Terrorism?
Ah social media, how we all love you. Great for reconnecting with old friends, meeting new people, and recruiting for terrorists groups. Yes, you actually read that right. ISIS has been using Twitter and Facebook to recruit new members and coordinate different attacks. So how do the American people respond to this pressing matter? well, by doing ignoring it of course! To stop these terrorist collaborations there needs to be some added incentive, which is exactly what Senator, Charles Schumer, plans on doing. ABC news reports that Schumer is proposing a bill that provides a minimum reward of $25 thousand dollars for anyone who will provide useful information about ISIS schemes on social media networks. In fact The U.S. Department of State has already given out roughly $125 million in rewards to 80 people. "There is no doubt about it, ISIS actively uses social media as one of their main weapons. We are in a time when a terrorist a world away can corrupt a disaffected youth -- and with just a few posts or tweets, can push them to plan or carry out acts of terror. We need the public's eyes to alert authorities if they see someone they know writing things they know spell trouble. And we need to offer a minimum reward for this information if it actually does prevent an attack." This story really goes to show the power innovation, social media in an ever changing world. Now, what are you waiting for? go bust some terrorists on Facebook!
